Offensive Line Splits

If reading 600 words about the importance of line splits is not your cup of tea, by all means skip this post. Wait, don’t -- splits are really important! This seemingly minor detail could make a world of difference in your running game. During my first year coaching, we scrimmaged several of the stronger teams in our conference after two weeks of practice. The results were troubling. Play after play was stuffed by opposing defensive linemen and we struggled to generate anything positive between the tackles. Before our first game we tightened our line splits from fingertip-to-fingertip to fingertip-to-shoulder. Over the course of that season we had pockets of offensive success, but it typically came with outside runs and against physically weaker opponents. Youth Football Practice -- GoPro Helmet Cam View

It's no secret that I love video and aim to capture as much of what we do with our youth teams on video as possible. A couple years ago, I purchased a basic GoPro camera and some standard GoPro accessories, one of which allowed me to mount the camera securely on a football helmet. At appropriate times I have done this and recorded practice video in hopes of gleaning valuable takeaways. Did it work? Yes! No magic "a ha!" moments, but here's one thing: last fall we discovered through these videos that our quarterback was not tall enough to see over our offensive line on certain passing plays, so we modified those plays to be straight rollouts. The plays were then more effective in games. So it wasn't just cool video, it added value to our team! Communicating with Families

When my older son started tackle football, the communication we received from this organization and his coach was primarily paper-based and word of mouth. His team assignment and information regarding the start of practice arrived in the mail. In-season updates were small strips of paper handed to players after practice. We have come a long way since then! Here are four tools for communicating with a large group. Email : Pros - Established communication medium. Good for longer message containing lots of information. Best for sharing attachments. Cons - Every season there will be at least a handful of parents who do not have an email address, and a few more who have email but do not regularly check it. Facebook : Pros - Most people have Facebook accounts (may be a con?!). Group messaging or private group are accessible by phone, tablet or computer. Group communication can be complemented by a public-facing Facebook page featuring photos, video, events, and other announcements. C...
