Tackling Circuit: Near Hip/Near Shoulder

Inspired by this Twitter thread by Coach DeMarco, we shared video of individual components of the daily tackling circuit practice by our players. We'll call this station "Near Hip/Near Shoulder."

An angle tackling circuit, players partner up 5 yards apart (progressing to 10 yards after kids get the hang of drill), with one holding a hand shield. Partner with shield jogs forward at 45-degree angle, with tackler sprinting to meet him. Tackler buzzes feet, coming to balance and executes shoulder tackle without taking teammate to ground -- keeping head to opposite side of shield-carrier’s path. The tackler’s head is behind the tackle. For these first two drills, do your best to match players of similar sizes and abilities to limit mismatches.
